Museum WineNestled against a state forest in rural Marong, the Sandhurst Ridge vineyard was first planted in 1990. Premium red wines are produced from the dominant varieties of shiraz and cabernet sauvignon. White wines of chardonnay and sauvignon blanc have been produced since 1999. 1998 ShirazThis classic Bendigo Shiraz was hand-plunged and basket-pressed, and clearly displays its varietal fruit flavours. Matured in new American oak barriques, this elegant wine has matured gracefully since its release in January of this year. Its tannins have softened with its time in the bottle and whilst the wine has still further ageing potential, it is drinking very well right now. 1999 Cabernet SauvignonAs with all our Cabernet Sauvignon releases, the wines beg for time and patience and seem to have a lot more to offer after their third birthday. The 1999 Cab is elegant yet full, and exhibits the ruby red colour of youth and a blackcurrant nose with hints of cedar from 15 months of maturation in French oak barriques. The berry fruit and cherry on the palate is enhanced with the development of savoury-earthy characters typical of this variety. We recommend putting this Cab down for a couple of years at least, and waiting in joyful anticipation for the good things it has to offer. 2000 Cabernet SauvignonThis Cabernet Sauvignon displays an intense brick-red colour and a refined bouquet of berries and black cherry with nuances of sweet oak. Complex berry characters currently dominate the young wine, which is held together by a structure of firm yet fine tannins. As with all our past Cabernets, this wine will benefit very much from careful cellaring, allowing the development of more complex savoury characters, together with softer and silkier tannins. 2000 ShirazA robust and typically Bendigo Shiraz. The wine shows off a deep colour with purple tinges. A nose of macerated berries and sweet oak is followed by a palate of intense fruit-driven characters complemented by spice and pepper. All this is supported by a firm structure of fine tannins. Matured in American oak barriques for 13 months. 2001 ShirazOur Shiraz grapes are hand-picked from hardy, low-yielding vines on our estate, fermented in small, open vats, and basket-pressed. The wine is matured in American oak barriques for at least twelve months, to enhance its intense, fruit-driven characters. A subtle nose of sweet oak and macerated berries is complemented by fruit and spicy characters enveloped within a very full body. This Shiraz drinks well now, but cellaring it for a further five years or more will further develop its distinctive regional characteristics and robustness. 2002 Cabernet SauvignonOur Cabernet Sauvignon is matured in French oak barriques for twelve months. The result is a full-bodied wine with intense, fruit-driven characters displaying a nose of berries and black cherries. Whilst approachable now, cellaring for another five years will soften the fine tannins and develop the wine’s full complexity. 2002 Fringe ShirazThe quality fruit for this Shiraz was sourced from neighbouring growers in the Bendigo region, who grow to our specifications. The wine-making was identical to that of our estate wines, with fermentation in small, open vats and basket-pressing. This Shiraz drinks well now, but its firm structure and full body make it worth cellaring, too. 2002 Reserve ShirazAged an extra year in our cellars before release, this wine is simply stunning. Our oldest vines produce a Shiraz of intense character, with rich dark fruit flavours and a hint of chocolate. The 2002 vintage was magnificent for all our wines, making this reserve extra special and well worth cellaring for another five to ten years. Halliday’s 2005 Wine Companion rating: * * * * * 94 points. Alc/Vol. 14.3% Notes written on release in April 2005. 2002 ShirazThe balance of acid and fruit in this Shiraz gives it an elegance that is unusual for a wine so big and full-bodied. The fruit is up front right now, but cellaring it for a further five years or more will enhance its 18 month maturation in American oak barriques and further develop its distinctive regional characteristics. Alc/Vol 14.6% (Notes written on release in April 2004) 2002 ShirazThe balance of acid and fruit in this Shiraz gives it an elegance that is unusual for a wine so big and full-bodied. The fruit is up front right now, but cellaring it for a further five years or more will enhance its 18 month maturation in American oak barriques and further develop its distinctive regional characteristics. Alc/Vol 14.6% (Notes written on release in April 2004) 2003 Cabernet SauvignonAlready displaying hints of the wild cherry and liquorice characters which infuse our aged Cabernets, this wine is generous in flavour, with fine structure and a long finish. Thick grape skins in this dry season made for superb tannins. Matured in French oak barriques for fifteen months, this wine will develop in complexity and soften to silk with careful cellaring for another five to ten years. 2003 Fringe Cabernet SauvignonLike our Fringe Shiraz, the grapes for this wine were sourced from neighbouring vineyards, whose soils differ from ours just enough to produce a wine of slightly different structure to our estate cabsav, yet with the same beautiful regional Cabernet characters of cherries and subtle mint. Matured in French oak barriques. 2003 Fringe ShirazA plump Shiraz, exhibiting the typical regional characters of a Bendigo Shiraz -- ripe fruit and a hint of spice. High quality grapes were sourced from neighbouring ("fringe") vineyards and crafted into wine with the same care we give our estate fruit. Soft in its youth, this wine will develop nicely with some careful cellaring. 2003 Reserve ShirazOur oldest, lowest-yielding vines produce this wine of marvellous depth and complexity. Intense flavours of black fruits and dark chocolate are supported by a firm structure of ripe, fine tannins. We keep our Reserve back for an extra year of bottle age before release because it is definitely one which will go the distance. James Halliday’s rating: 93 points. Alc./Vol. 14.5% (Notes written on release in April 2006.) 2003 ShirazHandcrafted from our estate grapes, this is a full-bodied yet elegant Shiraz, displaying concentrated up-front fruit and spice characters. Matured in American oak barriques for fifteen months, the intense fruit tamed the oak nicely and coaxed out a subtle, integrated influence. Already approachable, but careful cellaring for 5 years+ will enhance its development. 2005 Cabernet SauvignonThis wine displays a delicate floral bouquet over smoky oak. This is a full-bodied cabernet, with a tight structure of understated black currants and dark berry fruit bound by a mouthful of fine yet grippy tannins. A balanced savoury French oak maturation complements the finish. Approachable now but certainly warrants several years in the cellar. 2005 Fringe Cabernet SauvignonThis cabernet, sourced from neighbouring vineyards to the west and south of us, displays cool climate spice and floral notes. The palate shows sweet berry fruit characters which are well married to savoury oak. Mouth-coating tannins and good acid balance give length to this elegant, medium-bodied wine. 2005 Fringe ShirazThe bouquet displays dark fruit over vanillin oak. The full-bodied palate of rich, ripe shiraz is enveloped in fine tannins. The intensity of the fruit and judicious maturation in American oak barriques tends to mask the level of alcohol. 2005 Reserve ShirazDeep, dark, vibrant crimson-red in colour, this shiraz is picked from the lowest-yielding vines on the estate. It has matured in fine-grained French oak barriques for 20 months, and it bursts on the palate with the mouth-filling intensity of ripe black cherries, blackberries and chocolately fine, silky tannins. Cellared on our estate an extra year before release, this shiraz shows a depth and concentration of flavour which lingers on the palate and delights now. But patience in long cellaring will be rewarded by complexities that are still concealed. Alc./Vol. 15.0%. 2005 ShirazA bouquet of cigar box savoury oak with forest floor characters introduces this wine. The palate displays undefined and restrained dark fruit characters enveloped in ripe mouth-coating fine tannins. This wine needs time to develop and cellaring is recommended for at least another three years. 2006 Cabernet SauvignonSubtle aromas of cherries, anise and cloves predict the rich depth of flavour on the palate. This is a quietly complex, intensely-flavoured cabernet where dark berries and black cherries unwind over the savouriness of finely ground spices and integrated French oak for a memorable finish. Firm, fine-grained tannins make this a wine which will cellar well. Alc./Vol. 13.5%
